AMERICA'S STREAMLINERS

BURLINGTON ROUTE

(DOME ERA)

The Burlington Route may have had more confidence in the future of the passenger train than any other railroad serving Chicago. Burlington was the last railroad to completely reequip a major train, with the Denver Zephyr in 1956. Burlington also was the only railroad actually operating more trains in Chicago in 1956 than in 1942. The difference being the Kansas City Zephyr and the American Royal Zephyr, introduced in 1953 without replacing any older trains. Although the General Pershing Zephyr between St. Louis and Kansas City had been discontinued in the meantime. And the name Mark Twain Zephyr was officially dropped between St. Louis and Burlington. Through some creative equipment utilization, certain cars suitable for both daytime and nighttime trains would be used on both trains, making a daily round trip. Equipment utilization even more creative was used on the Ak-Sar-Ben Zephyr, which might normally require two consists for a daily overnight schedule. But the California Zephyr was basically scheduled a turn around in Chicago of a little more than 24 hours. So each day, certain cars of one arriving train would be switched onto the other train departing, basically saving most of one consist. In addition, an extra sleeping car owned by the Pennsylvania Railroad enabled one car of the California Zephyr to operate through to and from New York. The through sleeper actually operated on alternate days via either the Pennsylvania Railroad or the New York Central. Meanwhile, the Union Pacific's City of San Francisco also had a similar sleeper arrangement to New York, so that each train and each railroad had one daily sleeper between New York and Oakland Pier.

The Zephyr Rocket was jointly operated with the Rock Island, with each railroad supplying a consist, except for the observation cars which were both owned by Rock Island. Burlington and Rock Island also jointly owned the line between Fort Worth and Houston, with each railroad operating a daily streamliner round trip. The Rock Island operated the Twin Star Rocket, through from Minneapolis. The Texas Zephyr was operated by Burlington subsidiaries Colorado & Southern and Fort Worth & Denver, with each subsidiary supplying a consist. After the Denver Zephyr was reequipped, the original 1936 articulated Denver Zephyr trains were transferred to the Texas Zephyr.

The Burlington Route also provided an entrance into Chicago for Great Northern for its Empire Builder, and for Northern Pacific for its North Coast Limited. Both trains operated to and from Seattle and Portland.

Only streamlined trains and the most important stations are shown.
