AMERICA'S STREAMLINERS

ATLANTIC COAST LINE/FLORIDA EAST COAST

(POST WW II)

After the war, the two Champion trains to the two coasts of Florida were made into full streamliners, including coaches and sleepers. Also existing over this route during the peak winter vacation season, was the Florida Special. This continues to be a major Amtrak long distance route. Except in 1963, after a lengthly strike on the Florida East Coast, trains between Jacksonville and Miami began using an Atlantic Coast Line and Seaboard routing. Those two railroads of course merged in 1967, forming Seaboard Coast Line, eventually evolving to part or CSX.

Atlantic Coast Line and Florida East Coast also participated with several other railroads in operation of three separate streamliners between Chicago and Miami, each operating every third day and overall providing daily service between the two endpoints. The Dixie Flagler originally used cars owned by Florida East Coast, and is described below. Also existing was the City Of Miami, originally using cars owned by Illinois Central, and the South Wind, originally using cars owned by the Pennsylvania Railroad. By 1951, the Dixie Flagler and South Wind schedules were lengthened to those shown below, with each train requiring two sets. While the City of Miami continued to require one set, operating on a different schedule not shown. It is not clear what additional cars were used to enable two sets for these trains. It is also not known what sleepers were used for the Dixie Flagler, which previously had only coaches.

Only streamlined trains and the most important stations are shown.
