AMERICA'S STREAMLINERS

ILLINOIS CENTRAL

(POST WW II)

Illinois Central's most celebrated new train introduced after the war was the City of New Orleans. A name which continues in use by Amtrak, although for a train on an overnight schedule more closely resembling the schedule of the Panama Limited. A mixture of lightweight and rebuilt heavyweight cars were used to equip this and a few additional trains. Illinois Central also acquired two twin unit diners and eight 10 roomette 6 bedroom sleepers from Chesapeake & Ohio. That railroad had many surplus new cars after cancelling its overly ambitious plans to introduce many new passenger trains. Illinois Central also acquired five of its own 10 roomette 6 bedroom sleepers. And the City of Miami received some sleepers, after operating with coaches only since its introduction in 1940. The City of New Orleans originally had a section from Louisville, discontinued in 1949.

Only streamlined trains and the most important stations are shown.
