SOUTHERN PACIFIC

(DOME ERA)

By the early 1950's, Southern Pacific finally streamlined a few of its major trains beyond California. But Southern Pacific never embraced the dome car concept as extensively as the other western railroads. The only ones being full length dome cars constructed in company shops out of the frames of some pre war passenger cars. Domes were assigned to the San Joaquin Daylight, the Shasta Daylight, and the San Francisco Overland which operated east to connect with the Union Pacific at Ogden. The Sunbeam and the Hustler between Houston and Dallas were among the first streamliners to be discontinued, in 1955. But other streamliners continued into the Amtrak era, although many meal service cars were replaced with cars with vending machines. Amtrak continues to operate over most of these main lines.

Southern Pacific also participated with Union Pacific in operation of trains operating east of San Francisco, most notably the City of San Francisco.
