AMERICA'S STREAMLINERS

MILWAUKEE ROAD

(DOME ERA)

In 1952, the Milwaukee Road introduced the Super Dome cars, which were the first full length dome cars ever built. A concept adopted later by three other railroads. The Milwaukee Road apparently was one of the early railroads to suffer declines in passenger train usage, reflected by the reduction in cars of its overnight trains, and the 1950 combining of the Chippewa Hiawatha with the Afternoon Hiawatha from Chicago to Milwaukee. And the discontinuance of the Hiawatha North Woods Service north of Wausau.

But beginning in 1955, the Milwaukee Road replaced the Chicago & North Western by providing an entrance into Chicago for Union Pacific, for its "Cities" trains operating to and from the west coast.

Only streamlined trains and the most important stations are shown.
