AMERICA'S STREAMLINERS
CHESAPEAKE & OHIO
(POST WW II)
After the war, the Chesapeake & Ohio had big plans to introduce the finest passenger trains available. First was the "Chessie", to be a luxurious streamliner between Washington and Cincinnati. Cars for that train were built by Budd in 1948. In addition, a large order of cars was placed with Pullman Standard, for delivery in 1950. But these plans turned out to be overly ambitious. The Chessie never ran, with most new cars resold to other railroads, and Chesapeake & Ohio retaining only four of the cars. And many of the Pullman Standard cars were cancelled or resold to other railroads. With three daily trains operating over the main line, sleeper schedules were complex, depending on time of day and direction. "F.F.V." stood for "Fast Flying Virginian". The last train surviving over this route was the George Washington, which eventually became Amtrak's Cardinal.
Only streamlined trains and the most important stations are shown.
