AMERICA'S STREAMLINERS
MILWAUKEE ROAD
(PRE WW II)
The Milwaukee Road's introduction of the Hiawathas between Chicago and the Twin Cities meant competition for the Burlington Route's Zephyrs. The Milwaukee Road built the cars themselves in the company shops. Shrouded steam locomotives were used initially, although a few pre war diesels were acquired later. The Hiawatha-North Woods Service connected with the Afternoon Hiawatha in New Lisbon, but during summer operated through into Chicago as a separate train.
Only streamlined trains and the most important stations are shown.
