AMERICA'S STREAMLINERS

ATLANTIC COAST LINE/FLORIDA EAST COAST

(PRE WW II)

Originally introduced streamlined Champion between New York and Miami, with Atlantic Coast Line owning two consists, and Florida East Coast owning the third consist. Florida East Coast also owned the Dixie Flagler consist, originally operating between Jacksonville and Miami, but in 1940 shifted to operate every third day to and from Chicago. Between Chicago and Miami, this was one of three all coach streamliners operating every third day over different routings between Chicago and Miami. Overall, one streamliner was leaving Chicago or Miami each day. And despite an unclear history on the existance of a pre war streamliner to Tampa, one did exist. Also unclear is the history of sleeping car service on these pre war streamliners. But heavyweight sleepers were evidently used, with few records on them.

Atlantic Coast Line and Florida East Coast also participated with several other railroads in operation of three separate streamliners between Chicago and Miami, each operating every third day and overall providing daily service between the two endpoints. The Dixie Flagler originally used cars owned by Florida East Coast, and is described below. Also existing was the City Of Miami, originally using cars owned by Illinois Central, and the South Wind, originally using cars owned by the Pennsylvania Railroad.

Only streamlined trains and the most important stations are shown.
