Not listed are power cars which were assigned to the original "City" trains, described at the Pre War Streamliners page.

This is basically a 1948 numbering scheme. Certain older locomotive numbers originally included letters, identifying their original assignments to the City of Los Angeles (LA), the City of San Francisco (SF), and the City of Portland (CP).

Locomotives assigned to the various "City" trains were originally jointly owned by the participating railroads. In 1948, joint ownership was dissolved. With ownership of #983, #986B and #986C going to Southern Pacific, and ownership of #984, #985, and #988 going to Chicago & North Western.

A second #988 is a former EMD demonstrator locomotive.

All F-units were renumbered to a freight series, prior to the lowest numbered E9's entering service.
