Terminal Station

Norfolk & Western was the main railroad serving Terminal Station in Norfolk, with its main line extending west to Cincinnati. Other railroads using Terminal Station were Virginian Railway, operating west to Roanoke, and Norfolk Southern Railway, operating southwest to Raleigh. The NS line diverged from the N&W line at NS Jct., 2 miles south. And the VR line diverged from the N&W line at South Norfolk, 3 miles south. All of these railroads eventually became part of the "new" Norfolk Southern.

Portsmouth

Seaboard Air Line originated at Portsmouth, with a line southwest to Norlina, where it connected with the main line south from Richmond to Miami.

North Portsmouth

Atlantic Coast Line operated a line southwest from the Pinners Point ferry terminal, with trains also making a stop at North Portsmouth, 1 1/2 miles from Pinners Point. ACL operated south to Wilmington NC. Trains connected at Rocky Mount with the main line south from Richmond to Miami. Southern Railway had trackage rights over this line from North Portsmouth to Boone, 8 miles west. The SR line continued west to Danville, where it connected with the main line southwest to Atlanta and New Orleans.

Newport News

Chesapeake & Ohio operated east to Richmond and Charlottesville, and beyond to Cincinnati and Detroit. Until the 1950's, trains actually terminated at Phoebus.

Cape Charles

Pennsylvania Railroad operated north to Wilmington, and beyond to Philadelphia and New York.
