A Union Terminal for Cincinnati was established relatively late (1933). The railroad pattern around Cincinnati was thus rather well established. Union Terminal was constructed along the Baltimore & Ohio, and trackage rights via B&O were thus required for many railroads serving Cincinnati. Cincinnati Union Terminal Co. operated the station. Immediately north of Union Terminal, was the junction with the Chesapeake & Ohio of Indiana line northwest to Chicago, used by Amtrak between 1974 and 1978. Ivorydale Jct. was an important junction north of Cincinnati, with the B&O Ohio Division to points east and the B&O Toledo Division splitting, along with the New York Central Big Four line to Dayton, Columbus and Cleveland. Amtrak presently operates over the Toledo Division line, and between 1976 and 1981 also operated over the Ohio Division line. Also existing north of Cincinnati was the Pennsylvania Railroad Cincinnati Division, which included a main line northeast to Xenia and Columbus, and the Richmond Branch north to Richmond IN and Logansport, and beyond to Chicago. Connecting with the PRR main line was the Norfolk & Western main line east to Norfolk. Immediately south of Union Terminal was the beginning of Southern Railway's Cincinnati New Orleans & Texas Pacific subsidiary, crossing the Ohio River and extending south to Chattanooga. And south of Union Terminal was Storrs Jct., a junction with the B&O St. Louis Division and the NYC Big Four line northwest to Indianapolis and Chicago. That Big Four line was used by Amtrak until 1973. Between 1972 and 1991, Amtrak suspended service to Union Terminal, instead using the River Road station, located along this Big Four line. And Chesapeake & Ohio and Louisville & Nashville crossed the Ohio River, with C&O extending east into Virginia and L&N extending southwest to Louisville and south to Knoxville and Atlanta. Amtrak continues to operate over this C&O line.
