Passenger service initially discontinued in 1971 with the creation of Amtrak.

In 1965, New York Central began using a new station to the east. In 1975, with the restoration of passenger service by Amtrak, a temporary station was built at 1 Columbus Ave., the approximate location of Union Station. Amtrak now has a newer station at that location.
