SUBURBAN/INTERURBAN RAILWAY HISTORY

(Aurora Elgin & Fox River Electric Co.)


1895 - Carpentersville Elgin & Aurora Railway Co. incorporated, completing interurban lines from Elgin to Carpentersville.

1896 - Carpentersville Elgin & Aurora Railway line completed from Elgin to Geneva.

1896 - Aurora & Geneva Railway Co. incorporated to construct interurban line between those cities.

1897 - Aurora Yorkville & Morris Railway Co. incorporated to construct interurban line from Aurora to Yorkville.

1897 - Elgin City Carpentersville & Aurora Railway Co. incorporated, consolidating Elgin City Street Railway Co., and Carpentersville Elgin & Aurora Railway Co.

1900 - Aurora & Geneva Railway line completed, and line completed from Aurora to Yorkville.

1901 - Elgin Aurora & Southern Traction Co. incorporated, acquiring Aurora Street Railway Co., Aurora & Geneva Railway Co., Aurora Yorkville & Morris Railway Co., and Elgin City Carpentersville & Aurora Railway Co.

1906 - Elgin Aurora & Southern Traction Co. merged with Aurora Elgin & Chicago Railway Co. to form Aurora Elgin & Chicago Railroad Co.

1922 - bus routes exist between Aurora and Elgin, and between Aurora and Big Rock, operated by unknown companies.

1924 - Aurora Elgin & Fox River Electric Co. incorporated to acquire former Elgin Aurora & Southern Traction Co. from Chicago Aurora & Elgin Railroad Co., which had reorganized in 1922 from Aurora Elgin & Chicago Railroad Co. Aurora Elgin & Fox River Electric Co. would be a subsidiary of Western United Gas & Electric Co.

1925 - interurban operation abandoned from Aurora to Yorkville. Subsidiary Fox Valley Bus Lines formed to operate replacement bus service, and later replace additional electric railway lines.

1926 - Cannon Ball Coach Line assumes bus service from Aurora to Yorkville, as part of through bus route on US Hwy. 34 paralleling Burlington Route railroad line. Cannonball Coach Line would later become part of the original Burlington Trailways, which would be under partial control of the railroad for many years.

1927 - Western United Gas & Electric Co. comes under control of Samuel Insull.

1932 - Samuel Insull resigns from Western United Gas & Electric Co.

1933 - Western United Gas & Electric Co. becomes subsidiary of Commonwealth Edison Co., Chicago's electrical utility.

1933 - interurban operation abandoned from Elgin to Carpentersville, after tornado damage.

1935 - Aurora to Elgin interurban line converted to buses, ending all electric railway operations.
