And in 1973, Morrison-Knudsen extensively rebuilt and renumbered 5 E8A's to 9900-9904, and rebuilt and renumbered 16 E9A's to 9910-9924. In 1978, 4 more E8A's were similarly rebuilt and renumbered to 9905-9908. The original 567B and 567C engines were replaced with new 645EC engines, and all rebuilt locomotives at 2400 horsepower were rated as E9's. Rebuilding included replacement of steam generators with Detroit Diesel HEP generators for the rebuilt bilevel cars. Some locomotives were named for suburbs along the line. Other locomotives were named for winners of a "name the diesels" contest.
All locomotives were retired in 1992 and sold. Some locomotives operated briefly for Maryland Area Rail Commuter (MARC).
Some of this locomotive roster information is from the magazine Extra 2200 South.
