Chicago & North Western's second alternate freight route between Chicago and Milwaukee was opened in 1903. This route included the now abandoned Skokie Subdivision from Mayfair to Valley, and also the Lake Subdivision (below), connecting with the main passenger and commuter line at Lake Bluff. The present route was formed by new extensions constructed between 1906 and 1912.
