Between Nachusa and Nelson, in 1909 a double track Lee County cutoff was constructed to the south, primarily for freight trains and bypassing Dixon. The cutoff was abandoned in 1941 westward, and in 1956 eastward.

Between Bluffs and East Clinton, the double track line originally followed a more circuitous route further north, passing through Fulton. In 1909, the present more direct line opened, and the original route was downgraded and mostly abandoned in 1939. Fulton was measured at milepost 135.5 and East Clinton via this route was at milepost 136.5.
