Immediately west of the bridge was a tunnel through parts of downtown St. Louis. Which was too restricting for newer larger locomotives and cars. In 1989, TRRA turned the bridge over to the City of St. Louis in exchange for the MacArthur Bridge. The Eads Bridge and tunnel were then used for construction of a new light rail line. Segment between Bridge Jct. and Q Tower now part of Union Pacific and Gateway Western joint line.
