2 tracks from Kensington to Michigan City, 1 track from Michigan City to South Bend. CTC in use Kensington to Grandview, controlled by dispatcher in Michigan City. ABS in use Grandview to South Bend.
Gauntlet segments exist for high level platforms at several stations. At each platform, one set of rails allows freight trains with wider cars to clear the platforms. Additional stations have one high level platform and one low level platform. A high level platform also exists at South Bend Airport, where the tracks end.
All substations were constructed as part of the 1926 electrification, except Carroll along the East Chicago bypass constructed in 1956, and Hegewisch in 1983, providing additional electrical capacity with the introduction of new air conditioned cars.
