The Loreley Rock is a landmark along the Rhein River between Koblenz and Frankfurt. I actually took this picture during a hike in 1967.

In 1967, a freight train is seen passing through a tunnel portal at the Loreley Rock. Railroads exist on both sides of the river. Freight trains usually used the "Rechte Rheinstrecke" (Right Rhein Line), while most passenger trains used the "Linke Rheinstrecke" (Left Rhein Line). Because of the curvy nature of the river, true high speed operation is impossible on these lines. But in more recent years, a new high speed rail line opened connecting Frankfurt with Koeln and the heavily populated "Ruhrgebiet" (Ruhr District).
