CHICAGO TRACK ELEVATION

LATER GRADE SEPARATION PROJECTS

As the United States became involved in World War I and the US government assumed control of the railroads, the work on track elevation slowed down. Track elevation largely stopped in 1936. And January 12, 1938, the Chicago City Council abolished its Committee on Track Elevation.

During the late 1930's and early 1940's, several city ordinances approved grade separation projects at various individual crossings. Funding was typically either through the Federal Public Works Administration, or through the Motor Fuel Tax Fund.
