CLASSIC TRACK DIAGRAMS

NEW YORK CENTRAL

Indiana Division

New York Central line from Cincinnati to Kankakee and Chicago. Amtrak inherited operation of the James Whitcomb Riley in 1971. But the bankrupt Penn Central allowed the track to deteriorate, to where Amtrak was forced to reroute the train beginning in 1973. Track diagram was based on a track chart which does not show signals, and an employee timetable which actually lists signals and their numbers. But some signal locations are estimated, because New York Central signal numbers only conveyed whole miles, instead of the more usual numbering of signals to the nearest odd or even tenth of a mile. Automatic block signals were installed in 1926 on the double track segment between Cincinnati and Greensburg, and in 1941 and 1942 on the single track segment between Greensburg and Dix and on the double track segment between Dix and Indianapolis. Between 1962 and 1967, line was basically converted to single track CTC.
