In 1964, the publicly owned Port Authority Transit (PAT) acquired the privately owned Pittsburgh Railways primarily serving the city, and 29 private suburban bus companies. The route numbering system was modified, as explained below, to accommodate the integration of the suburban carriers into the system. By 2010, route eliminations and consolidations over the years made it practical to adopt a simpler numbering system.
Pittsburgh's first bus routes were operated by Pittsburgh Auto Transit Co., starting in 1912. The first route operated between downtown Pittsburgh and Highland Park via Bigelow Blvd. Additional routes were introduced in 1916, including the Squirrel Hill route, eventually route 65. Pittsburgh Motor Coach began operating that route on 8/14/25. Pittsburgh Motor Coach was a subsidiary of Pittsburgh Railways, remaining a separate subsidiary until 1951.
The first Pittsburgh Motor Coach bus routes were intended to operate separately from the streetcar system. Those routes were first assigned their own set of one or two digit route numbers, duplicating some streetcar route numbers. In 1932, Pittsburgh Motor Coach began operating feeder bus routes connecting with the streetcar system, originally assigned route numbers in the 100's. And bus routes converted from streetcar routes were first numbered in the 200's. Beginning in 1941, new feeder bus routes received route numbers in the 200's.
Beginning in 1958, bus routes newly converted from streetcar routes retained the same streetcar route numbers. And on 11/13/60, those bus routes previously converted went back to the old one or two digit streetcar route numbers. The feeder bus routes were also renumbered, receiving available unused one or two digit route numbers. The original supplementary bus routes received new letter route designations.
With the 1964 takeover by Port Authority Transit, the route numbering system was modified to accommodate the integration of the suburban carriers into the system, including the addition of letters to the route numbers. As with the old system, basic route numbers were according to direction counterclockwise from northeast. Route numbers 1 through 95 were assigned in groups of five numbers, to each of nineteen main corridors radiating out of downtown Pittsburgh. Within each corridor, the last digit of the number would indicate the type of service. Local routes serving downtown Pittsburgh would end with 1 or 6, premium fare routes would end with 2 or 7, express routes would end with 3 or 8, local routes between communities outside downtown Pittsburgh would end with 4 or 9, and local routes within towns outside Pittsburgh would end with 5 or 0. Letters following the route numbers further differentiated the individual routes.
By 2010, route eliminations and consolidations over the years made it practical to abandon this numbering system, in favor of a simpler system, eliminating many letter suffixes. Some express routes were then assigned new letter designations. The remaining streetcar lines, subsequently upgraded to light rail lines, were assigned color names. The presence or absence of a route number in the 2011 column, indicates whether the route continued to exist in 2011.
Former Pittsburgh Railways routes are listed as "SC" or "BUS", with former route numbers, according to whether a route was first introduced as a streetcar or bus route. Former suburban bus companies are mentioned for those routes originally created by those companies. Some suburban bus routes evolved from streetcar routes which had been operated by West Penn Railways (WPRy).
Most discontinued routes were redundant to routes retained, or were replaced with extensions of other routes. Not available are dates of route changes implemented by Port Authority Transit. Not listed are certain Port Authority Transit bus routes which were short lived. Most routes with a "U" letter were introduced in 1973, to serve various universities and colleges. Also in 1973, Port Authority Transit began introducing various "Flyer" express routes, all with letter designations. Those "Flyer" routes are not listed. Many of those routes use the various busways which have been constructed in the Pittsburgh area.
Port Authority Transit was primarily responsible for transit within Allegheny County. Although Port Authority Transit acquired some private suburban companies which had operated in other counties. Some such bus service was subsequently assumed by transit agencies formed in those counties.
In 2022, Port Authority Transit was renamed Pittsburgh Regional Transit.

Busways
Many express and Flyer bus routes use the system of busways which have been constructed in the Pittsburgh area. The South Busway opened 10/26/75, using the streetcar tunnel through Mount Washington, south of downtown. The streetcar right of way was paved to allow for the operation of buses.
The East Busway opened 2/19/83, utilizing former Pennsylvania Railroad right of way, where two of the four tracks had been removed. And to the west, portions of the new Airport Busway are now in operation. Additional busway extensions are planned.
Light Rail
The only remaining former streetcar lines operate south of downtown Pittsburgh, existing largely on private right of way. The lines were upgraded into modern light rail lines, with a new downtown subway opening 7/3/85.
