In 1980, the publicly owned New Jersey Transit (NJT) acquired the privately owned Transport of New Jersey (TNJ). And in 1982, NJT adopted a route numbering system to replace an old numbering system which had been adopted in 1925. Under the old system, streetcar routes had odd numbers and bus routes had even numbers. And numbers were duplicated among the several TNJ operating divisions. The new system would eliminate duplicated numbers. The streetcars were eventually replaced with buses, with "All Service Vehicles" (combination trolleybuses and motorbuses) operating briefly on some routes. Some routes were eventually discontinued, with route numbers in parentheses. This page lists New Jersey Transit routes which can trace their histories back to the privately owned transit companies. Not listed are routes newly formed by New Jersey Transit.
The streetcar routes in the Camden area were generally not assigned the odd numbers customarily assigned to streetcar routes of other divisions. In 1930, Public Service Coordinated Transport assigned odd numbers to its routes newly acquired from Schultz Management Co. and Pennjersey Rapid Transit Co.
The 1926 opening of the Benjamin Franklin Bridge made it easy to introduce new bus routes operating directly into Philadelphia. The first new bus company formed that year was Pennjersey Rapid Transit Co. Then in 1929, Public Service Coordinated Transport formed a subsidiary, Schultz Management Co., to acquire various independent bus companies in the area. Finally in 1930, both companies were merged into Public Service Coordinated Transport.
Indicated is whether bus routes were acquired from Schultz Management Co. (SM) or Pennjersey Rapid Transit Co. (PJ)
Prior to full conversion to buses, several routes used All Service Vehicles (ASV) between 1935 and 1937.
In 1972, new subsidies were made available for most bus routes in the area, and routes were assigned letters. Double letters for intrastate routes, and single letters for interstate routes entering Philadelphia. By 1990, when New Jersey Transit assigned its universal numbering system to those routes, all routes had single letters.
Certain early bus routes which were soon discontinued and never received route numbers, are not listed.

Independent Bus Companies
Prior to the formation of New Jersey Transit, most bus routes were part of Public Service Coordinated Transport (PSCT) or Transport of New Jersey (TNJ). While some bus routes were newly created by New Jersey Transit (NJT). The following abbreviations are used for bus companies which remained independent from PSCT and TNJ, and were later acquired by NJT.
Manh. - Manhattan Transit Co.
Salem - Salem County Transit
