TRANSIT SYSTEMS IN NEW JERSEY

PRIVATE COMMUTER BUS LINES

The following private bus companies still operate in New Jersey, and have Web sites. Operations are generally subsidized by New Jersey Transit. Most regular routes provide commuter service to and from New York City. In addition, some companies offer trips from various points in New Jersey to the casinos in Atlantic City, along with charter service.

Academy Bus Tours
Established 1968, operates former Community Coach routes from New York City to Long Branch, Red Bank, Asbury Park, and other areas along north New Jersey coast. The coast routes had evolved from bus service, which in 1923 partially replaced streetcar and interurban railway lines operated by Jersey Central Traction Co. The original bus service in 1923 was operated by Rollo Trucking Corp., renamed Rollo Transit Corp. in 1925, and sold to Asbury Park-New York Transit Corp. in 1929. Asbury Park-New York Transit Corp. was listed in the Russell's Official National Motor Coach Guide until 1978.

Community Coach
Operates route from New York City via Livingston to Morristown, route introduced in 1923 by DeCamp Bus Lines, acquired in 1979.

Hudson Transit Corp.
Established 1922, primarily operating from New York City to points in Rockland County NY, but also serving points in Bergen County NJ.

Lakeland Bus Lines
Established 1952, operates from New York City to Dover and other communities, primarily in Morris County.

Rockland Coaches
Part of Red and Tan Lines operating from New York City to points in Bergen County and into Rockland County NY.

Suburban Transit
Established 1941, primarily operates from New York City to New Brunswick, Princeton, and nearby intermediate points.

Trans-Bridge Lines
Established 1941, operates between New York City or Newark and Phillipsburg, and beyond to Allentown PA.
