Routes are listed according to the 1983 numbering system, some changes have since occurred. Two columns are provided for old route numbers, to allow for listing of some route numberings. Not listed are the 300 series limited bus routes, generally making limited stops along established local routes. Many of those routes are numbered by adding 300 to the local route number. The 400 and 500 series express routes are only listed if they evolved from older routes.
In recent years, certain shuttle and circulator bus routes have been assigned 600 series numbers, "Rapid" service routes have been assigned 700 series numbers, and Busway routes have been assigned 900 series numbers. In addition, a few routes were replaced with routes operated by local municipal bus systems most of which had already had been operation. Those changes are not listed.
In 1988, Foothill Transit assumed operations in the Pomona/Covina/Claremont area, taking over certain routes from the Southern California Rapid Transit District. RTD route numbers were retained, those routes are indicated with "FT".
In 1921, letters were adopted for most streetcar lines in Los Angeles, replaced with numbers when they were converted to buses. Los Angeles Railway Co. bus routes were originally assigned numbers for internal use, beginning with 1 as they were introduced. In 1934, Los Angeles Railway Co. bus routes were assigned numbers in alphabetical order beginning with 41 into the 60's, and Los Angeles Motor Coach bus routes were assigned numbers in the 80's. Pacific Electric Railway Co. had a separate numbering system, with low numbers assigned to interurban trains, and numbers beginning with 50 for buses.
A few Los Angeles Railway Co. streetcar routes were converted to trolleybuses, prior to the conversion to motor buses. Those routes are indicated with "TB". All trolleybus routes were converted to motor buses on the same date as the last streetcars were converted to buses, which was 3/31/63.
Certain short lived routes are not included. Some of these routes were variations of a main route, different by one number, with an alternate branch.

In 1958, the Los Angeles Metropolitan Transit Authority (LAMTA) was formed by acquiring Los Angeles Transit Lines and the Pacific Electric Railway Co. They and their predecessor companies are abbreviated as follows:
LARY - Los Angeles Railway Co. (primary city streetcar system)
LATL - Los Angeles Transit Lines (1945 renaming of LARY after acquisition by National City Lines)
LAMC - Los Angeles Motor Coach Co. (formed 1923, acquired by LATL in 1949)
PE - Pacific Electric Railway Co. (primary interurban railway system)
Motor - Motor Transit Co. (formed 1917, operating over varying distances, acquired by PE in 1930)
ART - Asbury Rapid Transit (formed 1939 consolidating several companies), acquired by PE in 1954)
Beginning in 1953, the Pacific Electric Railway Co. was owned by Metropolitan Coach Lines.
LAMTA was succeeded in 1964 by the Southern California Rapid Transit District (RTD), and in 1993 by the present Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority (LACMTA). After the formation of LAMTA, additional private bus companies were acquired, abbreviated as follows:
XS - Crosstown Suburban Bus Lines (formed 1959 from below companies, acquired by LAMTA in 1961)
WB - Whittier Bus Lines (merged into Crosstown Suburban Bus Lines in 1959)
SC - Southern Cities Transit (merged into Crosstown Suburban Bus Lines in 1959)
SS - Sunset Stages (acquired by Southern Cities Transit in 1958)
XT - Cross Town Lines (acquired by Southern Cities Transit in 1954)
XL - Cross Town Lines of Lynwood (acquired by Southern Cities Transit in 1954)
HT - Holbrook Transit Co. (acquired by Southern Cities Transit in 1954)
BB - Benton Bus Lines (acquired by Holbrook Transit Co. in 1954)
XH - Cross Town Lines of Huntington Park (acquired by LAMTA in 1961)

National City Lines acquired the Pacific Electric Railway Co. local operations in Glendale and Pasadena in 1941, forming the above subsidiaries, and completed the conversion from streetcars to buses. And National City Lines acquired the Inglewood Transit Lines bus system in 1942. Inglewood City Lines and Pasadena City Lines were sold to independent companies in 1946 and 1963 respectively, and were both acquired by RTD in 1967.
Two bus companies operated in San Pedro, it is not clear which companies previously operated the local routes inherited by RTD.
Historically, the Pacific Electric Railway Co. operated lines into the counties beyond Los Angeles County. Including the San Bernardino Line. Between 6/9/40 and 11/1/41, rail service east of Baldwin Park was phased out and replaced with buses, route 53. First express bus service was introduced 6/6/47. And on 11/8/54, bus service was restructured, with service east of El Monte operating express via San Bernardino Freeway and renumbered route 60. The 1983 renumbering resulted in a route 496, operated under contract for the Riverside Transit Agency, and Omnitrans serving San Bernardino County. Route was eventually discontinued, as the transit agencies in those outlying counties assumed greater responsibility for the bus services in those areas.
