Part of Chicago & North Western's second alternate freight route between Chicago and Milwaukee. The original alternate freight route involved this line from Mayfair to River Jct., and the Weber Subdivision (below) from River Jct. to Evanston. As the line was downgraded, and the paralleling North Shore Line was abandoned in 1963, Chicago & North Western actually took over one of the North Shore Line tracks which at the time were in better condition.
