WEST VIRGINIA

EARLY BUS ROUTES

Beginning in 1921, intrastate bus service was regulated by the West Virginia Public Service Commission. Information could not be located, regarding the issuance of Certificates of Convenience and Necessity for bus service. But the March 1923 issue of the publication "Bus Transportation" included a table listing the bus routes in existence in West Virginia.

Not listed are city bus routes, along with bus routes operating strictly within one county.

This information does not include the actual bus companies operating most of the routes. For most routes it was not possible, to establish how these companies became part of the Greyhound or other larger bus companies.

One of the earliest intercity bus companies in West Virginia was operated by Edgar V. Hull, in 1920 introducing a route between Hagerstown MD and Winchester VA. In 1923 that company became part of Blue Ridge Transportation Co., affiliated with Greyhound.

Another early bus company was Pocahontas Transportation Co., which began operations in 1922 the area between Welch and Bluefield. That company later became part of Consolidated Bus Lines, which eventually became part of the Trailways system.
