Beginning in 1925, intrastate bus service was regulated by the Minnesota Railroad & Warehouse Commission. Information could not be located, regarding the issuance of Certificates of Convenience and Necessity for bus service. But the April 1923 issue of the publication "Bus Transportation" included a table listing the bus routes in existence in Minnesota.
Not listed are city bus routes, along with bus routes of a suburban nature operating strictly within one county.
This information does not include the actual bus companies operating most of the routes. For most routes it was not possible, to establish how these companies became part of the Greyhound or other larger bus companies.
The Greyhound system had its beginnings in Minnesota. The Mesaba Transportation Co. introduced routes from Hibbing in 1915 to Grand Rapids MN, and in 1919 to Duluth. The Jefferson Highway Transportation Co. introduced routes between 1919 and 1923 from Minneapolis to Fargo ND and to Grand Rapids MN. Red Line Bus introduced a route in 1921 and 1922 from Minneapolis to Little Falls, reaching Fargo ND in 1925. Boulevard Transportation Co. introduced routes from Minneapolis in 1923 to Willmar and in 1924 to Mankato. And Gopher Transportation Co. introduced a route in 1922 from St. Paul to Duluth. All of these companies were acquired by Northland Transportation Co. in 1924 and 1925, and Northland Transportation Co. became Northland Greyhound Lines in 1929.
