NORTH SHORE LINE

North Chicago to State Line

The North Shore Line's Waukegan station was located at Washington Street and Edison Court. A continuous path extends over the North Shore right of way to 89th Street in Kenosha.

North of North Chicago Jct., the original North Shore Line proceeded northeast into downtown Waukegan, utilizing the original streetcar trackage there. While the high speed line north to Milwaukee proceeded directly north, passing a mile west of downtown Waukegan. In North Chicago, the high speed line crossed under the Elgin Joliet & Eastern Railroad. View is looking north. The railway had passed under the bridge to the right, with the street to the left. Now the street passes to the right and the bicycle path passes to the left

Typical view of the North Shore Line high speed right of way through North Chicago, looking north across 18th Street.

On the high speed line to Milwaukee, the North Shore Line station in Waukegan was located at Washington Street and Edison Court, a mile west of downtown Waukegan. View is looking north.

From Waukegan north, the North Shore always had its own right of way. This scene is looking north from Golf Road, on the north side of Waukegan. Towards the left is Jack Benny Junior High School, named after the most famous person to come from Waukegan.

In Zion, the path is immediately east of the right of way. View is looking north, where the North Shore crossed over Salem Blvd. on a bridge. The station was located north of the bridge.

Russell Road is at the state line between Illinois and Wisconsin. The bridge carrying the path was built on the foundations of the old railway bridge. View is looking north.

Distance from North Chicago to State Line is 13 miles.

This segment could be done as one walk, or as two separate walks split at Zion, or at Winthrop Harbor at 9th Street.
