NORTH SHORE LINE

Skokie to Highland Park (Skokie Valley Route)

The segment within Cook County (south of Lake Cook Road) has not been made into a path.

The Skokie station at Dempster Street has been preserved. Although a few years after this photo was taken, the station was moved a short distance to the east. The CTA's "Skokie Swift" Yellow Line still operates to here. And a catenary support is visible above the roof to the right, from when the line used overhead electrification. CTA does not actually use the station, which instead is used by Starbucks and other businesses.

North of Skokie, the North Shore Line paralleled the Chicago & North Western (later Union Pacific) Skokie Valley freight line. Although a few years after this photo was taken, the freight line was abandoned. After the North Shore abandonment, C&NW began operating over one of the North Shore tracks, instead of its own, as far north as the "Valley" interlocking. The C&NW's own track in this area was in worse shape, and this proved to be a more inexpensive way for the C&NW to get a better track. This view is looking south from Gross Point Road, a half mile north of the Skokie station. The station is visible at the center of the picture. The C&NW can be seen curving, making the transition. The right of way cannot be walked and is also used by Commonwealth Edison Co. for electrical transmission lines. Commonwealth Edison and the North Shore Line had historical connections - both companies were once controlled by Samuel Insull.

View at Dundee Road in Northbrook, looking south. The former Chicago & North Western used the North Shore right of way until a few years after this photo was taken, when the C&NW line was abandoned. And the base of a catenary support is visible at the center of the picture. A short distance north of here is the "Valley" interlocking, where this single track C&NW line would combine with the C&NW double track main line from Proviso Yard. North of Valley, the C&NW continues to use its original right of way.

Through Highland Park, the North Shore Skokie Valley right of way has been made into a path. The former Chicago & North Western at this point is its double track main line from Proviso Yard, and here the C&NW continues to use its original right of way. About a mile south of here is "Valley" interlocking, where the now abandoned single track C&NW line from Skokie made the transition from the North Shore right of way in combining with the line from Proviso Yard. This view is looking north from Clavey Road, the C&NW is visible to the left.

At Old Deerfield Road in Highland Park, the North Shore Line's Briergate station remains, and is home to a heating and air conditioning contractor.

Distance from Skokie to Highland Park (Briergate) is 10 miles.

The Skokie station can of course be reached using the CTA Yellow "Skokie Swift" Line. The path access near Lake Cook Road can be accessed using the Pace #213 and #626 buses. And the Briergate station can be reached from the Metra/Union Pacific Highland Park station using the Pace #473 bus route.
