UNION PACIFIC

(DOME ERA)

In 1955, the Milwaukee Road replaced the Chicago & North Western as Union Pacific's connecting railroad into Chicago. Dome cars and other new cars were acquired at that time. And some cars owned by the Chicago & North Western were removed from service, replaced with similar cars owned by the Milwaukee Road, details unknown. And in 1956, the Challenger was combined into the City of Los Angeles, with sleeping car service marketed as the City of Los Angeles, and coach service marketed as the Challenger. The City of Los Angeles included two through sleepers to New York, one each via Pennsylvania Railroad and New York Central. While the City of San Francisco included one through sleeper to New York, operating on alternate days via each railroad. Meanwhile, the Burlington Route's California Zephyr also had a similar sleeper arrangement to New York, so that each train and each railroad had one daily sleeper between New York and Oakland Pier. The San Francisco Overland gradually evolved into a streamliner between Chicago and Oakland, discontinued east of Omaha in 1955, and functioned as a connection for the City of St. Louis. Trains #457 and #458 used dome equipment originally constructed for General Motors' "Train of Tomorrow", which toured nationwide. The dome parlor car was actually constructed as a sleeper, with rooms available for day use.
