AMERICA'S STREAMLINERS

LOUISVILLE & NASHVILLE/CHICAGO & EASTERN ILLINOIS

(POST WW II)

In 1946, the Louisville & Nashville began operating the Georgian between St. Louis and Atlanta. In 1948, the Louisville & Nashville replaced St. Louis with Chicago as the northern terminal of the Georgian, entering Chicago via the Chicago & Eastern Illinois, and using cars owned by the Louisville & Nashville. And in 1946, the Louisville & Nashville began operating the Hummingbird between Cincinnati and New Orleans. And in 1951, Chicago & Eastern Illinois basically renamed the Whippoorwill to the Hummingbird, functioning as a connection with the Cincinnati to New Orleans train, with some through cars operated. And in 1956, Chicago & Eastern Illinois reequipped the Meadowlark with a Rail Diesel Car (RDC), eliminating the Chicago & Eastern Illinois of its own conventional streamliners.

Louisville & Nashville also participated with several other railroads in operation of the Dixieland (formerly the Dixie Flagler) and the South Wind between Chicago and Miami, and the Crescent between New York and New Orleans.

Only streamlined trains and the most important stations are shown.
