AMERICA'S STREAMLINERS
MILWAUKEE ROAD
(POST WW II)
The Milwaukee Road's passenger trains always had a unique look, with most cars built in the company shops. Prior to the war, the Milwaukee Road introduced its unique Beaver Tail observation cars. And in 1948, the Milwaukee Road introduced its Skytop observation cars, a concept which no other railroad ever adopted. The Hiawatha-North Woods Service connected with the Afternoon Hiawatha in New Lisbon, but during summer operated through into Chicago as a separate train. The Morning Hiawatha was the last surviving train over this route between Chicago and Minneapolis, but upon formation of Amtrak in 1971 was combined with the Empire Builder.
Only streamlined trains and the most important stations are shown.
