Until 1957, most former Michigan Central trains (through Detroit and points east) used a routing to and from Chicago's Central Station, and stopped at Gary's Michigan Central Station. In 1957, all such trains were transferred to Chicago's La Salle Street Station and stopped at Gary's Union Station.

Trains 453 through 460 to and from Valparaiso were commuter trains, operated independently of Amtrak until 1979. Amtrak operated the commuter service from 1979 until 1991, even though commuter service had not normally been considered Amtrak's responsibility.

The Pennsylvania Railroad station was last used by Amtrak trains in 1991, and has been demolished. The Michigan Central and the Wabash stations also have been demolished.
Baltimore & Ohio and New York Central shared Union Station in Gary. While Pennsylvania Railroad, Michigan Central, and Wabash had their own separate stations.
