Flint was located on the Grand Trunk Western main line between Chicago and Port Huron, and on the Pere Marquette, later Chesapeake & Ohio Saginaw Division between Detroit and Bay City. Each railroad used its own station. Grand Trunk Western originally used a route more centrally located through Flint. In 1902 Grand Trunk Western constructed a more direct bypass line south of Flint originally for freight trains. And in 1928 Grand Trunk Western passenger trains began using the bypass line, stopping at a new station. In 1922 Pere Marquette also constructed the Flint Belt line for freight trains, while passenger trains continued to operated through downtown Flint until their discontinuance in 1950.
