EARLY STREET RAILWAY/INTERURBAN RAILWAY COMPANIES

Most of these street railway companies eventually became part of a larger streetcar company.


Alum Rock Railway Co. - opened 1896, merged 1905 into San Jose & Santa Clara County Railway.

San Jose & Santa Clara Railway - opened 1868, merged 1905 into San Jose & Santa Clara County Railway.

San Jose & Santa Clara County Railway - formed 1905 as reorganization of San Jose & Santa Clara Railway, merged 1912 into San Jose Railroads.

South East Side Horse Railroad Co. - opened 1877, merged 1877 into North Side Horse Railroad Co.

North Side Horse Railroad Co. - opened 1875, controlled 1882 by People's Horse Railroad Co.

First Street Railroad - opened 1872, controlled 1881 by People's Horse Railroad Co.

Market Street & Willow Glen Railroad - opened 1877, controlled 1882 by People's Horse Railroad Co.

People's Horse Railroad Co. - formed 1879 to acquire control of several horse railroads, reorganized 1894 as San Jose Railroads.

San Jose Railroads - formed 1894 as reorganization of People's Horse Railroad Co., sold 1939 to San Jose City Lines/National City Lines.

Santa Clara Interurban Railroad - formed 1906, merged 1909 into Peninsular Railroad.

San Jose-Los Gatos Interurban Railway - opened 1904, merged 1909 into Peninsular Railroad.

Peninsular Railroad - formed 1905, in 1909 acquired Santa Clara Interurban Railroad and San Jose-Los Gatos Interurban Railway, dissolved 1934.
