LEYDEN MOTOR COACH

Bus service in this area was originally introduced by Wilcox Transportation Co., in the following years.

1925 - Maywood to Des Plaines via 5th Ave.
1926 - Grand Ave. from Harlem Ave. to Mannheim Rd.
1926 - Irving Park Rd. from Neenah Ave. (city streetcar terminal) to Mannheim Rd.
1929 - Mannheim Rd. from Grand Ave. to Irving Park Rd.

Leyden Motor Coach Co. had its beginnings in 1926 as River Forest-North West Motor Coach Co., renamed in 1930 to Leyden Motor Coach Co. Bus service was introduced over some streets already served by Wilcox Transportation Co., but not permitted to carry local passengers. But in 1931, because of complaints about the Wilcox Transportation Co. service, restrictions were lifted against Leyden Motor Coach Co. providing local service. Shortly after, Wilcox Transportation Co. ceased operations. And Leyden Motor Coach Co. emerged as the local operator on all of these streets, except 5th Ave. which was discontinued and is not shown.

Leyden Motor Coach Co. and predecessor River Forest-North West Motor Coach Co. introduced bus service in the following years.

At an unknown time, the North Ave. route was extended west into Elmhurst, not shown on map, including service south on York Rd. In 1949, service was introduced from York Rd. and North Ave. to Addison Rd. and Lake St., with alternate routes via North Ave. and Addison Rd., or via York Rd. and Lake St.

In addition, Highway Bus Lines began operating in 1941, with a route on Irving Park Rd. from the Neenah Ave. streetcar terminal to Mannheim Rd., and returning via Mannheim, Lawrence, River Rd., and Irving Park Rd.

Map shows Leyden Motor Coach routes, as they existed around 1950. In 1963, some of the Leyden Motor Coach routes were acquired by West Towns Bus Co.
