EARLY STREET RAILWAY COMPANIES (NORTH SUBURBS)

All of these street railway companies eventually became part of the Eastern Massachusetts Street Railway. The Eastern Massachusetts Street Railway was formed in 1911 as the Bay State Street Railway Co., renamed in 1919. The Bay State Street Railway Co. was formed out of the merger of the Boston & Northern Street Railway, operating north of Boston, and the Old Colony Street Railway Co., operating south of Boston. The Boston & Northern Street Railway was basically formed in 1901 as the merger of the Lynn & Boston Railroad Co. the Lowell Lawrence & Haverhill Street Railway, and North Woburn Street Railway Co.. In addition, several services initially assumed by MBTA were outside the MBTA jurisdiction. But those services were operated by MBTA under contract for a few years, until additional public transit agencies were set up to assume the operations.
