Muni continues to use the letters for its remaining rail routes. For a while, the cable car routes were identified as routes 59-60-61, but are now identified on maps with letter abbreviations reflecting the streets served. The California Street Cable Railroad Co. (CalC) remained an independent cable car operator until 1952.
The first horse cars in San Francisco were introduced in 1860 by the original Market Street Railroad Co., on Market Street. Little information is available for the horse car operations.

On 2/19/80, the Muni Metro tunnel was opened underneath Market Street for the N Judah route, replacing surface operation on Market Street. And as of 6/17/81, all weekday service on the rail routes J-K-L-M-N were using the tunnel. Weekend service continued to use the surface route.Muni routes A and B Geary replaced a cable car line originally opened by the Geary Street, Park & Ocean Railroad.
Muni routes C California and E Union were previously United Railroads routes, acquired by Muni in 1915. The California segment was a steam dummy line, until conversion to electric operation in 1905.
In 1915, three temporary routes G-I-J operated to the Panama-Pacific International Exposition.
Muni route L Taraval was temporarily a bus route, until completion of the streetcar route.
49 Van Ness-Mission is a supplementary route, created recently and duplicating segments of previously established routes.
The only trolleybus routes to be replaced with motor buses were route 9 Richland, route 12 Mission-Ocean, and the Howard segment of route 41. The Howard segment of was converted in 1970. And routes 9 and 12 were replaced with revised motor bus routes in 1983.
In 1983, Muni discontinued the Howard segment of route 41, with bus service since provided strictly by SamTrans, from San Mateo County.
In 1996, trolleybus route 8 on Market Street was replaced with streetcar route F. Bus route 32 Embarcadero was also replaced with streetcar extensions of routes F and N.
In 2007, bus route 15 on Third Street was replaced with light rail route T.
In 2009, several routes were discontinued due to funding shortages.
