EARLY BUS ROUTES

Beginning in 1929, intrastate bus service was regulated by the Tennessee Railroad Commission, later the Tennessee Public Service Commission. Information could not be located, regarding the issuance of Certificates of Convenience and Necessity for bus service. But the May 1923 issue of the publication "Bus Transportation" included a table listing the bus routes in existence in Tennessee.

Most bus routes at the time were of a suburban nature, connecting a major city with communities either within that county or an adjacent county. These routes are not listed, also not listed are city bus routes.

This information does not include the actual bus companies operating the routes. And it was not possible, to establish how these companies became part of the Greyhound or other larger bus companies.
